In addition to paying homage to the great Artist, it is also important to remember the great man, a man who made the History of his time, distinguishing himself in the role of critic and guardian of the arts and active in international diplomacy, bringing to fruition the task entrusted to him in 1815 by Pope Pius VII for the recovery of goods stolen by Napoleon.
He was also a great entrepreneur, at the head of a workshop that counted several collaborators involved in the different stages of the creative process followed by Canova to obtain the final marbles and, for this reason, he is sometimes referred to as the last of the ancients and the first of the moderns; moreover, the artist elaborated strategies of communication and promotion of his works, translating them into engravings and spreading them among the European courts.
The Museum
The museum complex, in Treviso – Possagno, consists of the Birth House and the Gypsotheca, located in the original basilica and extension designed by Carlo Scarpa, which houses the original plaster models from which the marbles that today can be found in the most important museums in the world were translated.
The Birthplace houses the artist’s paintings, drawings, engravings and personal effects.
The Germin Wing, library, garden and brolo are also part of the compendium.
The museum offers visitors numerous experiences: from guided tours and educational workshops to night-time candlelight tours.
